The Golden Shovel: Reflections on Windrush and the African & Caribbean Communities

18th October 2023 – 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Join us for a special poetry reading and event to launch The Golden Shovel curation of Poetry Jukebox, which is installed at Belfast City Hall. Presented by poets Nandi Jola and Raquel McKee, the poems in this curation pay homage to black writers.

This event is presented in partnership with Quotidian – Word on the Street and is part of the Belfast International Arts Festival.

About Nandi Jola

Nandi Jola is a South African-born poet, storyteller and playwright, as well as a Smock Alley Theatre Rachel Baptiste 2022 Programme recipient. She was a creative writing facilitator for Ulster University Books Beyond Boundaries NI in 2021. Her one-woman play The Journey opened the International Literature Festival Dublin in October 2020. She represented Northern Ireland at the Transpoesie Poetry Festival in 2021 and is a commissioned poet for Poetry Jukebox Ambiguities, a James Joyce programme of the Centre Culturel Irlandais and Impermanence Way Archive Project 2022. She is studying for an MA in Poetry at Queen’s University Belfast. She published her debut poetry collection, Home is Neither Here Nor There (Doire), in 2022. She is co-curator of The Golden Shovel Poetry Jukebox.

About Raquel McKee

Raquel McKee is originally from Jamaica and now lives in County Antrim. Her poems have appeared in publications including Her Other Language (Arlen House), Writing Home (Dedalus Press), and Fortnight @ 50 Anthology (Fortnight Magazine). She has performed her poetry and stories at various events through the Armstrong Storytelling Trust, Libraries NI, and Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council, including the John Hewitt International Summer School, Belfast Book Festival, Cúirt, and Hillsborough Festival. Lives in Transit in which Raquel played Asha was aired on BBC Radio 4.
