Stitching for Solidarity is a thought-provoking exhibition that highlights the poignant narratives woven into the fabric of resistance. In
collaboration with Conflict Textiles, we are delighted to present 16 arpilleras from 1976, ’77, and ’78, acquired in Chile by a member of the
Chile Solidarity Committee of Berlin. These arpilleras, expertly mounted on Irish linen, are exhibited together for the first time, marking a historic occasion. Additionally, this collaboration marks the inaugural merging of Chilean hessian and Irish linen by Conflict Textiles, adding a unique dimension to the exhibition.

Arpilleras are powerful expressions of resistance, crafted collaboratively by women to protest against human rights abuses and repression. Conflict Textiles amplifies these narratives of resilience amidst conflict, aiming to foster dialogue, understanding, and healing. Through its dedication to showcasing the power of textiles as a medium of expression, Conflict Textiles stands as a beacon of hope and solidarity, promoting positive change through the threads of creativity and storytelling.

About the Arpilleras

Arpilleras (pronounced ‘ar-pee-air-ahs’) are three-dimensional appliquéd tapestries originating in Chile. These unique and powerful creations have deep historical significance and are rooted in the socio-political landscape of Chile during the Pinochet dictatorship (1973–1990). Crafted by women, often working collaboratively, arpilleras transcended their artistic form to become poignant expressions of resistance. Serving as a medium for denouncing human rights abuses and the repression endured during this tumultuous period, arpilleras stand as both works of art and crucial testimonials to the resilience and courage of those who sought to amplify their voices.

The art of making arpilleras subsequently spread to womens’ groups in different parts of the world, including the UK and Ireland, giving women the opportunity to tell stories about political conflict, anti-war protests, repression, resistance, survival, denial, death, disappearances, displacement, national histories, environmental concerns, indigenous land struggles and the transition to democracy in textile form.
