Reading Room

The Library has an extensive General Collection available on open access on Levels 2 and 4 (service point at Level 2), and all of which is available for loan to members. General reference works are available on Level 4.

The Lending Collection is strong in both fiction and non-fiction, and ranges from the 19th century classics to the latest books, and caters for popular taste as well as the more adventurous reader. We always aim to have in stock the newest books, including bestsellers.

Other features include:

  • Wide range of current periodicals for consultation and loan
  • All major daily and weekly newspapers
  • Audiocassettes available for loan
  • Extensive selection of fiction and non-fiction
  • Good selection of American fiction and non-fiction

CHILDREN'S LIBRARY

The Children's Library offers an extensive range of fiction and non-fiction books for children of all ages.

Location - The Children's Library is situated right beside the Main Issue Desk on Level 2, and is only a few yards from the General Lending shelves and the Coffee Shop. Parents or guardians can therefore browse or relax with a cup of coffee knowing that their children are close at hand. In the Children's Library there are a number of suitably sized chairs and desks so that our younger readers can relax with a good book in an area reserved for them. Friendly staff are nearby to assist with any queries.

What We Offer :

Creative WrittingFiction for all ages - We have a wide and comprehensive stock of fiction for young people, ranging from classic works, like L.M. Alcott's Little Women or L.M. Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables series, to more contemporary work, including J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series, Jacqueline Wilson's Tracy Beaker books, popular collections like Goosebumps or Sugar Secrets, and novels based on TV series like Hollyoaks.

Childrens Library Picture Books and Readers - We have a large number of books for our very young readers. For instance, there are a multitude of colourful books based on favourite TV characters such as Bob the Builder, Postman Pat, the Wombles and Kipper. In addition, we have a number of books by some of the most popular authors for young children including Dawn Apperly, Mick Inkpen and Val Biro.

Encyclopaedias - The Library contains a number of encyclopaedias specially designed and published for young people, including Children's Britannica and the "Dorling Kindersley' range. These are especially useful for that tricky homework project!

Non-fiction - We hold a large number of 'Dorling Kindersley' and 'Kingfisher' books on various aspects of the world around us. The Library also includes the ever-popular Hidden Histories series of books, which take an irreverent look at the past, and a large number of other factual books that provide information on everything from coping with exams to dealing with divorce.

Activities - The Children's Library also contains a variety of materials to keep children interested and entertained including a number of jigsaw puzzles, activity and colouring-in sheets and pairs cards.
