Sam Hanna Bell made a phenomenal contribution to Northern Irish literature. He was determined to capture and preserve Ulster rural life in his writing and in the many programmes he produced for the BBC. The day contains a formidable line up of speakers each exploring Bell’s significant literary signature including writers Carlo Gebler and Glenn Patterson, and actress Roma Tomelty. (Refreshments are included in this event.)

Sam Hanna Bell events at the Linen Hall have been produced in association with the Ulster Bank Belfast Festival at Queen’s.

Children’s Readings, Saturday 24 October 11.00am/Free
Looking for something entertaining for the kids? The Linen Hall has now begun a series of readings in our dedicated children’s area. It’s also a great opportunity to introduce youngsters to the treasures of the Linen Hall Library. And while the children are being entertained, adults can browse themselves or relax in our café (event suitable for 4 to 7 year olds).

Linen Hall Reading Group, Thursday 29 October/1.10pm/Free
All are welcome to come along to the popular Linen Hall Reading Group. This month’s title up for discussion is Sam Hanna Bell’s provocative novel December Bride.

December Bride was banned in Ireland in the 50s because of its content which was deemed too shocking for the time. A young girl in rural Ulster rails against the religious restraints present in her generation and becomes the partner of two brothers. The trio is shunned by a society steeped in a strict moral code. The book examines the shackles of religious expectations and the overwhelming temptation of human nature in country life.

Russell’s Revenge – A Night of Terror at the Linen Hall, Thursday 29 October 7.30 pm/£10
Leading United Irishman and former Librarian of the Linen Hall Thomas Russell was hanged at Downpatrick Goal in 1803. Does he still walk the hallways of the Linen Hall at night? This evening of drama and poetry, inspired by actual events, is our ‘take’ on Russell’s colourful past. (Not suitable for young children)
