THE WORLD'S ONLY CAVE HILL DIAMOND CONTINUES TO SPARKLE AT THE LINEN HALL THROUGHOUT AUGUST

The Diamond has been part of Ulster folklore for generations and was found in the late 1800s in the Cave Hill area. It sits as the centrepiece of an exhibition in the Library that explores the history of the Diamond and Cave Hill. Supporting the exhibition are a number of talks and events taking place in the Library over the summer.

The schedule of events for August is as follows:

Belfast Gems – Cave Hill and the Diamond - All of August – Saturday 12 September/Exhibition/Free
The famous Cave Hill Diamond will be on display for all to see after being re-discovered in a private collection three years ago and presented to the Linen Hall Library in June. The exhibition examines the facts and folklore around the Diamond and the incredible journey the Diamond has taken since its discovery in the Cave Hill area in the late 1800s and subsequent disappearance in the early 1900s.

There’s also an exhibition of Northern Irish artist Raymond Piper’s work. Born in England, Piper spent many years in Belfast and particularly loved the Cave Hill area of which he produced many studies.

The Belfast Hills Partnership talks about the Cave Hill - Wednesday 12 August/1.00pm/Free/Talk
Jim Bradley, manager of Belfast Hills Partnership, talks about the work being done to protect and preserve the Hills for future generations.

(The Belfast Hills Partnership is an independent charity which seeks to improve how the hills are managed.)

Stepping Through Time on Cave Hill - Wednesday 19 August/1.00pm/Free/Talk
Ben Simon from Belfast City Council Parks Department discusses the history of the landscape of Cave Hill. Audience members will be treated to early maps of the area along with some of the stories and traditions of the Hill and Belfast Castle.

Linen Hall Reading Group - Thursday 27 August/1.10pm/Free
Anyone and everyone is welcome to come along to the popular Linen Hall Reading Group. This month’s title up for discussion is Towards Another Summer by Janet Frame.

Nobel Prize nominee Janet Frame has penned an exquisite novel about exile, homesickness and belonging. The central character, Grace, lives in England, but pines for her native New Zealand. She struggles to define ‘home’ and looks inwardly to find a balance that ceases to exist geographically.

Saturday 29 August at 11.00am – Tour of the Cave Hill Diamond Exhibition/Free
Discover the story of the Cave Hill Diamond, its origins, discovery, disappearance and reappearance in a gentleman’s attaché case three years ago. The exhibition covers three floors of the Library’s Vertical Gallery. Booking must be in advance to participate in this tour.
